Knuckles the Echidna was a strange boy. He grew up without caring about his past, only caring about the duty he was entrusted with: to protect the Master Emerald. It was his duty as the last remaining echidna. With this duty in mind, he had no need for friends, family, nor excitement, in his life. Though these things did tend to come after him, whether or not he appreciated their appearance.

Chaos the Echidna was a strange girl. She grew up with only her grandfather, Athair, to take care of her, knowing nothing of her past except for the name that Athair had given her. She wore nothing save a purple cap embroidered with her namesake “C” and purple sneakers to match.

Contrary to Knuckles’ beliefs, he was not the last remaining echidna. His race was not extinct, but rather, endangered. During a hunt for the ever powerful Super Emeralds, he came upon his long-lost grandfather, and with him, his long-lost baby sister, Chaos. After their grandfather’s death, Chaos followed Knuckles back to his home, and was integrated into Knuckles reluctant “social group,” and welcomed into the family.

Though Knuckles wasn’t accustomed to having a family to look after, he and Chaos manage to get along fairly well, though they aren’t without their spats. Knuckles liked his privacy, whereas Chaos was afraid to be alone, and this distinction in lifestyle preferences can be taxing on their psychological states. But, in the end, they were siblings, and they did come to appreciate each other’s company.

Usually, anyway.

“SHUT UP!” Knuckles the echidna yelled at his little sister, having finally reached his breaking point. Chaos, the sister in question, let out a shriek of fright before she fell backwards off the shrine and rolled violently to the ground below.

“What was that for?” She called up to the top of the podium, where her brother stood guard of the Master Emerald. “You could have killed me!”

Knuckles growled at the pest, yelling down, “You wouldn’t stop making that idiotic noise! I can’t concentrate on anything!”

“What exactly do you have to concentrate on!?” Chaos retorted. Knuckles, not having an answer, ignored the statement, and turned back to stare into space, supposedly “doing his duty” as guardian.

Chaos treaded up the stairs, taking care to make as much noise as possible, before stopping in front of her brother, crossing her arms, and proceeding to tap her foot.

Knuckles raised an eyebrow and looked at her. “What?”

“I’m bored!” She wasted no time in revealing the source of her anxiety. “Why can’t we go do something fun? You could teach me how to fly or something like that!”

“No one is forcing you to stay. I find it relaxing.” Knuckles looked away from her and shut his eyes. “If you’re bored, go do something. Maybe bother Tails, or Rouge, or ANYONE.”

“Rouge, Rouge, Rouge.” Chaos complained. “She’s all you think about, isn’t she?”

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

“Why not save everyone the trouble and go ask her to marry you?”

Knuckles threw a punch at his little sister, which she easily dodged.

Chaos refused to back down. So, as Knuckles closed his eyes again and leaned back against the Master Emerald, she plopped herself down right in front of him, and stared into his closed eyelids.

In the beginning, Knuckles either didn’t notice her there, or chose to ignore her. As Chaos sat there, she kept her breathing quiet and indistinguishable. As the minutes ticked by, she raised the volume of her breathing, tier by tier, until finally she sat in front of Knuckles, panting to near hyperventilation, and spraying spit all over his determinedly relaxed face.

“WHY MUST YOU TORTURE ME?!” He finally shrieked out, spraying his own spit to counteract hers.

“WHY MUST YOU BE SO BORING?!” The younger sibling retorted in the shrill voice of a young girl at her angriest.

Knuckles grabbed handfuls of his quills in his fist and pulled at them, a frustrated yell escaping his mouth.

“Why can’t you just leave me to my peace and quiet?!”

“Fine! Maybe I will go find Rouge and tell her how awful of a husband you would be!”

And without another word, Chaos ran off from the Master Emerald shrine, leaving her brother his long desired peace and quiet.

“Sheesh,” Chaos muttered to herself as she wandered aimlessly around Angel Island. “He isn’t any fun.” She kicked up pieces of gravel and rocks with her feet as she walked,  and crossed her arms in an attempt to look angry. This didn’t amount to much however; there wasn’t any point in being indignant if no one is around to see it. She relaxed her arms as she approached the edge of the island, looking down the abyss towards the ground, a million miles away.

Chaos was eager to let off some steam, so she cupped her hands around her mouth and wailed to anyone who would hear her, “Why is he so stubborn!!??” In return, all she received was a stereotypical echo effect coming back at her. (stubborn...stubborn...stubborn...)

As the echo surrounded and pulsed through her, she sat down in front of the chasm with her legs crossed, and her head resting on the fist of her hand.

It wasn’t that she hated her brother. Quite the contrary, she loved him more than anyone in the world (except perhaps her grandfather, Athair.) She just wanted more excitement in her life. Her thirst for adventure was not something Knuckles shared; he was quite content with his peaceful lifestyle. It might have been different if Chaos could bring herself to share his sense of purpose, but in reality, she didn’t think anyone really could.

Chaos gave a long sigh, and hoisted herself up. Time to stop feeling sorry for myself, She decreed.

Unfortunately, when one hangs around giant chasms, accidents tend to revolve around said chasm. All it took was one trip over one untied shoelace to send the small echidna cascading down towards the crashing water far below.

Instead of life flashing before her eyes, Chaos’s mind froze. Unable to think, unable to react, only able to fall and await what would certainly end in the snapping of her neck against the unforgiving ocean.

But then, something happened.

Almost if by instinct, as she fell, Chaos positioned herself in a “superman position” with her arms stretched out in front of her. Her quills billowed out behind her (since her hat had blown off) and the impossible happened.

She stopped falling.

When Chaos regained coherent use of her mind, she noticed that all around her body there was a faint, green glow emanating all over her skin. Just like Knuckles, Chaos finally learned to control her namesake power. She could use the chaos energy throughout herself to keep her body elevated midair.

This was quite a feat, and though she had saved herself from falling, she still didn’t know how to maneuver herself. So she stayed in that position for a good ten minutes, simply suspended midair, diverting all of her concentration to not losing control of the power and continuing to plummet towards the water.

As Chaos lost the adrenaline in her body and began to calm down, it became harder and harder to maintain her control of the power. She began to shudder, and she could visibly see the light flickering on her body. She knew she didn’t have long before she lost it completely, so she decided to try to propel herself over to land.

She leaned herself forward, and gravity took it’s course, she began to fly, slanting downwards as she went. Luckily, there was a shore very close to her, and by maneuvering her arms, she managed to steer herself to it. As she reached the shore, she pulled up from her downward fall, and used to momentum to cruise over to the land.

And that she did, but not before landing headfirst in a tree.

“Chaos? Is that you?” A voice called out from behind her. “Why are you in a tree?”

“A little help..?” Chaos sputtered out, and the owner of the voice grabbed their hands on Chaos’s feet and wrenched her out of the mess of leaves.

Shaking all the branches out of her quills, Chaos looked up and saw none other than,

“Rouge? What are you doing here?” Chaos exclaimed. Standing in front of her was the jewel thief, former GUN agent, pain-in-Knuckles’-ass, bat that had become a foremost part of Chaos’ life, simply because of the time she spent around Knuckles. Rouge gave a hearty laugh and responded saying, “I could ask you the same thing.”

Chaos flushed red at the echidna-sized hole the tree now possessed. “I took a nasty fall, that’s all.”

“From Angel Island? You have some pretty impressive survival skills, girl.” Rouge snickered. “That would explain why you aren’t wearing your hat though.”

“Well what about you?” The short tempered echidna retorted. “What are you doing here?” There was a quick pause. “Oh, right. Your going up to see Knuckles, aren’t you. Great.”

“Why is that a bad thing?” Rouge asked, puzzled. Chaos responded with a glare.

“He’s so BORING nowadays.” Chaos erupted. “He does nothing but sit in front of a lump of rock day in and day out! I’m sick of it! You’d think he cared more about that forsaken rock than real people!”

Rouge flashed an expression that Chaos didn’t expect; empathy. It didn’t last long, and it certainly seemed out of place on the features of the fashionable bat, but it was empathy all the same.

In that moment, it occurred to Chaos that she wasn’t the only one who found Knuckles frustrating. Rouge had probably been dealing with the same things she had been, the only difference being Rouge had known Knuckles for a longer amount of time.

Rouge seemed to notice Chaos’ contemplation, and again, gave a knowing smile. “Knuckles is a hard one to figure out. I’ve known him long enough that I’ve gotten used to it. He grew up away from other people, he’s socially awkward. He doesn’t know anything besides guarding that big, green rock of his. He doesn’t know how to react towards people. His sense of duty is his life.” The bat laughed at the echidna’s perplexed look, and that laugh cracked the solemn mood that hovered amidst the air. “Once you learn to work around that, he isn’t all that bad.”

Chaos remained silent for another moment, then nodded, a grin on her face.

“Right! Well now that’s all taken care of, need a lift back to Angel Island?”

OMYGAWSH FANFICTION?!?

In my defense, this is for a secret santa :3 Luckily, I happen to know a lot about Sonic fanfiction *cough cough* staying awake all night in 6th grade writing it *cough cough*

*whistles* Anyyywayyyy
This is for :icontoni-the-mink:'s secret santa, and it was requested I write a short story involving Knuckles and his little sister Chaos.

ABOUT THE STORY:
Here is reference on the character, Chaos (Knuckles' OC Little Sis): [link] NO not the demon water lord who destroyed station square, this is a completely different character who belongs to the mysterious "Kitt" and to Toni the Mink.

This story is set in my head-sonic-world combined with Toni's head-sonic-world. Which, I think is essentially a mix of Sonic X and the Sonic Comic cannon. You might notice Athair is mentioned, but Julie-Su is not. I would have written her in but Knuxouge is so much better Rouge was easier to integrate. Well...don't think as far into it as I am.

I am so sorry it is so short! This could be so much better than it is ;-; But it's not, and this is what I have, so I hope you enjoy it anyway. :3
Happy holidays!!

Sonic characters, locations, titles, games, action figures, earrings, woolen sweaters, and coffee mugs belong to Sega and/or Archie
Chaos the Echidna belongs the Ever Mysterious Kitt and/or Toni the Mink.

The writing belongs to me, no stealing!
